The Gospel

The word gospel means “good news.” But to understand why it is good news, we must first understand the story of the world—and our place in it.

God’s Creation

In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. He made the world good, beautiful, and ordered. You wouldn’t have found suffering, pain, or death.

God created human beings in His own image—to know Him, to love Him, to represent him as people who live under His gracious rule.

God made us to glorify Him and to enjoy him forever. We were made to fellowship with Him, to worship Him and to reflect His character in the world.

God is holy, righteous, and perfectly good. Everything He does is right.

Our Rebellion

God promised to give our first parents life if they perfectly obeyed. Shockingly, they rebelled against God disobeying His command. This rebellion brought sin, suffering, and death into the world.

Because our first parents stood as our representatives, we share in that fallen condition. We are not merely imperfect—we are sinners by nature and sinners by choice. We have all turned away from God, we have all ignored His authority, and we have all lived for ourselves rather than for Him.

The result of sin is separation from God, spiritual death, and the just judgement of a holy God. One day, every person will stand before God to give an account. God will judge everyone according to his perfect law. And hell is the eternal place God has prepared for all who have sinned.

That’s the bad news.

God’s Promise

Yet God did not leave mankind without hope. From the very beginning, God promised a Saviour. And throughout all of human history, God has unfolded His plan to rescue sinners and to restore all of his creation.

And at the centre of that glorious plan stands Jesus Christ.

Jesus Is The Gospel

Jesus Christ is the eternal Son of God who took on human flesh over two thousand years ago. He lived the life we have failed to live—a life of perfect obedience to God. He loved perfectly, He obeyed perfectly, and He fulfilled God’s law completely.

He then willingly went to the cross. There He bore the punishment that sinners deserve. On the cross, He suffered in the place of His people, satisfying the justice of God. Three days later, He rose from the dead.

His resurrection proves that sin has been defeated, death has been conquered, and salvation has been accomplished.

The gospel is not mere advice about how people can improve their lives. It is the bold announcement that Jesus Christ has accomplished the salvation of His people.

Such message of salvation continues to spread over the world today, changing hearts, families, societies, and entire civilisations for God’s glory.

“The kingdom of heaven is like a grain of mustard seed that a man took and sowed in his field. It is the smallest of all seeds, but when it has grown it is larger than all the garden plants and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and make nests in its branches.”—Matthew 13:31-32

Reconciliation

How then can anyone be reconciled to God? The Bible calls sinners to respond with repentance and faith.

  • Repentance means to turn away from sin and self-rule.
  • Faith means to trust in Jesus Christ alone—not in your own goodness, religious efforts, or achievements.

“because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.”—Romans 10:9

Salvation is not something we earn. Salvation is received as a gift of grace.

“For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.”—Ephesians 2:8-9

All who turn to Christ in repentance and faith are forgiven, declared righteous before God, adopted into His family, and given the hope of eternal life.

The Lord calls all repentant sinners to be baptised (immersed in water) in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. He also calls them to belong to a body of believers—to be part of their local church.

It is in the local church that believers are built up in their faith through the preaching of God’s Word, the fellowship, the participation of the Lord’s Table (bread and wine), and the prayers. It is in the local church that believers are discipled as followers of King Jesus.

It’s Over To You

This message is for you.

No matter how bad your past is, Jesus Christ welcomes repentant sinners to come to Him.

“For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.”—Luke 19:10
